Character of Molnár János
Molnár János Cave is a flooded thermal karst cave in Budapest. Its passages were formed by underground water flows and the interaction between warmer, mineral-rich water and cooler karst water. Large chambers, branching passages and distinct water layers make the cave remarkable. It is named after the Hungarian pharmacist János Molnár, who studied the springs and dry sections in the nineteenth century.
Discovery and exploration
János Molnár investigated the cave in 1856. Underwater exploration began in the twentieth century. Major new sections were discovered from 2002 onwards. Exploration and scientific surveying continue to this day.
